The species of filamentous algae that perhaps causes the most concern in fresh water systems around the world is Cladophora glomerata. This is called blanket weed (blanketweed). However, there are over 150 different species of cladophora.

Blanket weed (blanketweed) can grow at tremendous rates when the conditions in the pond are suitable. In very high light levels with high levels of nutrients, blanket weed can grow at over 2 metres per day.

Blanketweed

Other filamentous algae, also referred to as blanketweed or blanket weed, that cause problems in ponds are species of Spirogyra, Rhizoclonium and Enteromorpha. Worldwide, there are over 400 different species of the genus Spirogyra. Spirogyra tends to show in ponds as a tangled pond scum. It is also called "water silk", "silk weed" and "mermaid tresses". On sunny days, the mats of spirogyra filaments usually float on the surface of the water. They are kept afloat by tiny bubbles of oxygen arising from photosynthesis. These algal mats then sink when the sun goes down and the process reverses as photosynthesis is reduced. As a result, the strands of Spirogyra consume oxygen for cellular respiration. Carbon dioxide is then produced as a waste product. Where there are thick algal mats present, large fluctuations in the dissolved carbon dioxide and oxygen levels in the water can occur. This can lead to rapid changes in the pH of the water that in turn can cause stress and even death to other organisms, eg fish, living in the water.

Blanketweed

Enteromorpha intestinalis is another form of blanket weed that occurs in ponds. It is tubular in form and rarely grows longer than about 40cm. There are over 50 different species of the genus Enteromorpha. There are over 20 species of the filamentous genus Rhizoclonium.

Control of Pond Algae

The presence of algae in ponds need not necessarily cause a problem. However, in many cases it does and the pondkeeper is advised to remove it.

Planktonic algae can be controlled in garden ponds by installing an ultra violet filter. The UV light is very effective in agglomerating these single celled algae into clumps that then can be "caught" in the physical filter attached to the pond.

However, UV filter lights have no effect on filamentous or macrophytic algae and other control methods have to be used. These methods include the use of chemicals and microbial products. Many pondkeepers prefer not to use chemical methods.

Goodbye Blanketweed FAQ's

What is Goodbye Blanket Weed?

Goodbye Blanket Weed is a 100% natural, bio-friendly treatment that combines the powers of beneficial bacteria, enzymes and activated barley straw to control blanket weed in garden ponds.

How does it work?

Goodbye Blanket Weed restores your pond's balance by breaking down and digesting the materials in a pond that create algae and blanket weed problems. By reducing the nutrient levels in a pond, blanket weed growth will be reduced.

How do I dose it?

One sachet is to be added to a 1000 gallon pond each week. If you have a 2500 gallon pond, add 3 sachets a week. We recommend that for the first week you double the dose to help to kick-start the process in your pond. Then treat your pond on a weekly basis. It is supplied in no-mess, no-measuring water-soluble sachets which should be added to flowing water in your filter or pond.

Can I overdose?

Goodbye Blanket Weed is not a chemical treatment and adding more than the recommended dose will not harm your plants or fish.

How long does it take to work?

Goodbye Blanket Weed is a living, biological solution for blanket weed and requires the correct pond conditions for it to work effectively. Unlike many chemical algae treatments, Goodbye Blanket Weed is not an instant fix.

2 Evolution Aqua Blanketweed Inhibitor

Evolution Aqua Blanketweed Inhibitor

People are concerned that a lot of the products offering a remedy use copper which acts as a poison. Although this will offer a temporary solution, copper is also toxic to fish. The other problems of poisoning or killing blanketweed is that the resulting 'fall out' of dead strands will block filters and/or pumps, causing a loss of filtration and therefore upsetting the beneficial bacteria colonies we have created and are trying to maintain.

This is a totally natural product that inhibits the growth of blanketweed and is harmless for all pond inhabitants including fish, frogs, filter-bacteria and plants.

As many of us know, heavy blanketweed growth in our ponds, although not a chemically dangerous problem, is unsightly and blocks our filters/pumps when it breaks off. A slight presence of nitrate/phosphate combined with a day of bright sunlight can be enough to cause a blanketweed outbreak. The growth rate of blanketweed can be vigorous and the risks associated with not controlling its growth and reproduction can be catastrophic. These range from the problem of depleted oxygen in the pond/filters to filters/pumps becoming blocked that will eventually stop functioning.

Most existing products on the market are designed to kill the weed once it has formed. Blanketweed Inhibitor, which is totally fish safe, simply affects the calcium structure of the blanketweed and inhibits its growth and its ability to produce reproductive spores.

3 Free-Flow Effective Aqua Herbicide

Free-Flow Effective Aqua Herbicide

Blanket Weed is a major and ongoing problem for Koi and pond keepers. FreeFlow is concentrated barley straw extract and quite simply gets rid of the dreaded blanket weed. FreeFlow is a new and effective solution to one of the biggest problems faced by Koi and pond keepers. Not only is FreeFlow the solution but it's an Organic solution!

Barley Straw is widely acknowledged as a great way of controlling Blanket Weed - but who wants clumps of barley straw floating around in their ponds!!. FreeFlow allows you to have all the benefits of barley straw - without the hassle.

The reason FreeFlow works so well is that rather than working to try and change the water in ponds (which varies enormously) FreeFlow targets the cause of the problem - the Blanket Weed.

It works by impeding the reproduction and development of the algae spores themselves. Blanket Weed has a finite life span and once that's passed it dies off. Without using FreeFlow before it dies it releases thousands of spores which seed the next generation of Blanket Weed - FreeFlow prevents this process.

FreeFlow simply and effectively prevents new spores being released into your pond - this has a double benefit - the Blanket Weed still dies back at the end of its natural life cycle but in ponds using FreeFlow there is no massive die back and no consequential deluge of dead and dying Blanket Weed. Instead FreeFlow users experience a natural and gradual reduction over time. Finally, FreeFlow also works for all types of Blanket Weed.

4 Viresco Koi Blanketweed Control

Viresco Koi Blanketweed Control

What are the benefits of using Viresco in ponds?

Viresco Aqua will give three basic benefits to the pond keeper. It will reduce and remove nutrients (nitrate and phosphate) in the pond water that feed algae. As a result, blanketweed (string algae) and algae bloom (green water) die of starvation. Secondly, Viresco Aqua will digest waste organic matter in the pond. Thirdly, Viresco Aqua will improve the health, growth and disease resistance of fish.

Should I use Viresco Aqua or Viresco Koi to remove blanketweed and algae bloom?

Where ponds have little or no organic waste, then the waste digester part of Viresco Aqua is somewhat superfluous. Our recommendation, therefore, is to use Viresco Koi. For all general garden ponds in which organic waste arises from fish excrement, from surplus food or from wind carried leaves and grasses, we recommend Viresco Aqua. If in doubt then use Viresco Aqua.

How is Viresco applied?

Viresco is a dry powder. We advise that the appropriate amount be mixed into water and allowed to stand for a few hours. The water should be taken from the pond. Ideally it should be mixed in the morning and applied to the pond in the evening. Also some air should be introduced into the solution via the use of an air stone or regular whisking. Never leave the solution for more than 24 hours before applying to the pond.

How frequently should Viresco be used and how long does it last in the pond?

Some of our customers make one application and then see no more blanketweed for over one full year. Others keep blanketweed at bay for a few months with one application. However, a minority of pond keepers need more than one dose to suppress blanketweed. Remember, every pond is different.

Should the pond keeper apply maintenance doses of Viresco?

It makes sense to consider the application of maintenance doses. However, unlike recommendations for some other products, we do not suggest what and when these should be. We advise that nitrate levels should be regularly checked and the readings used as a guide as to when more Viresco should be added.

What difference do fish stocking levels and overfeeding make?

Many ponds have filters with capacities that are far greater than those needed for the ponds' volume. More fish tend to be introduced knowing that the filters can cope with the increased amounts of ammonia. Where this is the case, then more Viresco than our suggested dose should be used. The amount required is linked to the increased amounts of ammonia produced rather than just straight water volume. As a yardstick, if more than 60 inches of fish are in 1000 gallons of pond water, more Viresco should be added.

Similarly, where overfeeding occurs or when very high protein foods are use, more ammonia is produced. More ammonia means more nitrite and more nitrate. More Viresco should be used.

How quickly does Viresco work?

Many people see blanketweed dying back within 4 to 5 days. For others it does take longer. For most people it occurs within about 3 weeks. If, after this time, no noticeable change has taken place, then apply a second dose.

What happens as the Viresco starts to work?

The colour of the blanketweed starts to change from green towards brown. It also becomes brittle and pieces break off. Some people have reported that pH levels in the pond water increase as the blanketweed dies.

Should the blanket weed be removed before applying Viresco?

We would advise that as much of the blanketweed as possible should be wound out before the Viresco is applied. This will reduce the need to clean up weed debris after it has died. It will also keep better control over rising pH levels.

Is Viresco safe for fish?

Yes, Viresco is safe for fish. It was initially formulated for use in commercial fish farming to improve the growth, health and disease resistance of the fish. The fact that it suppressed algae growth by removing the nutrients on which algae feed turned out to be a bonus.
